Understanding Trauma in Animals

(And what you can do to help)

Have you ever reached out to a cat or dog and they have only shown fear or aggression? You are trying to help them, but how do get the message across. How can you connect with them on an emotional level?

Just as we humans may suffer from PTSD and anxiety disorders, animals have been known to develop mental health issues, too. Whether it be after a traumatic event, living their life on the streets, recovering from surgery or medical illnesses.

You might have adopted an animal that has brought their mental baggage and strange behaviours with them from a previous life.

Trauma is the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual's ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self and their ability to feel a full range of emotions and experiences. These events typically involve the loss of control, betrayal, abuse of power, helplessness, pain, confusion and/or loss.

This definition applies to both humans and animals alike. The only difference is that humans have a range of therapies and tools to get their life back on track, animals don't.

Animals don't always understand what is happening and why, they only know they must fight or flight. Often this could have been triggered by a series or single event, that created distress in these animals lives.

This can turn them into timid and scared or aggressive and self-protective.

You know you want to help them, but how do you get your message across?

Imagine the difficult symptoms of PTSD taking root in one of your beloved pets.

It is well known that far more pets that have been adopted from shelters have anxious dispositions and behaviours than those kept by a single family since puppyhood. Particularly separation anxiety as animals in shelters may have had several homes and not the stability of care by one individual or one home. It creates a lot of uncertainty in their lives and they become very anxious when they are on their own.

However animals can develop anxiety from any background. In my 20 years experience as an animal communicator, this is one of the most common and important problems that people face with their loved animals.

You love them so much, you only want to take the 'Hurt away.

These mental problems can also be the hardest to fix'. Where do you start to help them to heal? How do you know what caused the trauma in the first place, and how do you get them to understand - YOU want to HELP them!

NOW you have the perfect opportunity to make a difference. To them and to other animals that are stuck in this position, not knowing how to move forward and become the happy, fulfilled animal they should be.

They just need understanding, compassion and patience. But they also need someone who has the knowledge and can show them the way.

I have helped many animals come through their darkness. NOW! I will show you what I mean in the free Animal Talk Webinar: Understanding Trauma in Animals (and what you can do to help)
