Have you ever reached out to a cat or dog and they have only shown fear or aggression? You are trying to help them, but how do you get them to understand this? How can you connect with them on their level?

We hear a lot about Mental health issues that some people may be suffering  in these uncertain times.

But just as we humans may suffer, Did you know that animals can suffer too? From PTSD, anxiety disorders and a multitude of mental health issues. Whether it be after a traumatic event, living their life on the streets, recovering from surgery or medical illnesses? Or maybe you have adopted an animal that has brought their mental baggage and strange behaviours with them from a previous life.

" Animals don’t understand what is happening around them, they only know they must fight or flight. This can turn them into timid and scared or aggressive and self-protective. You know you want to help them, but how do you get your message across?"

Science has just discovered that PTSD shows the same patterns in animals
 in the wild.

Imagine how animals could benefit from your learning?

Animals can develop PTSD just like Humans. Caused by a variety of events, some of which we do not know the history. This is what makes it harder to help them heal.

IDENTIFY TYPES OF TRAUMA

It is well known that far more pets that have been adopted from shelters or the like have anxious dispositions and behaviours than those kept by a single family since puppyhood. Often this could have been triggered by a series or single event, that created distress in these animals lives.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF PTSD?

Signs of PTSD differ across the species. What are the warning signs, what instigated the trauma and how to relieve and

3 MAIN TYPES OF TRAUMA

ACUTE Trauma from a single incident.

CHRONIC Trauma is repeated & prolonged.

COMPLEX Trauma is exposure to varied  & multiple events.

Wildlife

Imagine the world of pain to break through when wildlife have been brought in from bushfires, floods or  car accidents. Coming into a totally alien world, how hard is it to connect with them, especially if they have lost the will to live?

ANIMAL CAREGIVERS CAN SUFFER FROM TRAUMA ALSO

Caregivers give 100% all the time. so they can suffer trauma too, how do you identify the signs and protect your own emotions to stay strong and help them further.

Have you worked with animals and not been able to help them?

Unless you are told their history, how else can you find out what happened to them, what scares them, what makes them not trust you? More importantly, what you need to do to help them HEAL?

We know cats think they are in control, but when they are not, they soon let us know. Sometimes there is a fine line between playing & letting their instincts kick in.

Often dogs show aggression as a safety net, then they are labelled dangerous. From their point of view, it is self preservation.

swan with a broken wing

How do you connect with a wild animal that has never felt human hands? What must they be thinking even though you mean well?

Connecting to them, understanding what they went through, enables you to reach them to bring them back.

Once you understand what they have been through, you can work to break through their PTSD. Create a heart to heart connection.

So many horses learn 'bad' habits like cribbing, pacing back and forth, anti-social behaviour within the herd. Let's connect and unlearn these habits, and soothe their heart.
